Autobiography: For this paper, you are expected to pick an important event from your life and analyze it by using the theoretical perspectives and analytical tools (such as concepts) that we discuss in class. This event can be moving to another country or city, starting university, getting a job/internship, spending some time abroad, volunteering, changing a dietary preference, participating in a social movement… Or you can pick an experience such as your experience with food, body image, the city, transportation, being an athlete and so on. Use your “sociological imagination” to situate your personal story within history, to connect a personal trouble to larger social issues, and to draw links between a personal experience and the wider society. In other words, this is not just a personal story, it is a story that allows the reader to see how private experiences and so-called personal events are manifestations of public issues and social processes (e.g. culture, social structure, systems of inequality). More guidance will be provided throughout the semester.
